The current Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the prevalent inequalities in the South African health system, the stigmatisation of persons who tested positive with the virus, the impact of the pandemic on the family, and the role of the media in societies across the globe. QUESTION: Take the above statement into account and answer the following five (5) questions: ▪ Describe what the notion of health inequality entails and discuss the gender related health inequalities experienced in South Africa. Health inequalities are prejudicial and preventable differences in health across the population and between different groups within society. Health inequalities are brought around because of the conditions we are born, grow, live, work and age. In its attempt to reverse the history of women’s discrimination and marginalization, the government since 1994 has passed several laws developed to promote equality between women and men regardless of race, class, disability, and sexual orientation. The regulations guard the welfares of women and men in the household, the criminal justice system, occupation health, assets, education and training, governance and institutional support, and general equality. The new and enabling laws must be galvanized to ensure that women feel the remedies inherent in these measures. In addition, there are still some gaps that need to be addressed.
