The Declaration of Independence by 13 American states from the North was a bold and risky move that was tantamount to a declaration of war because there was no way the British Monarch would have relinquished their control without a fight. Whereas the American side was keen on establishing self-governance, the British were protecting economic and political interests. The Americans were viewed as rebels because they were fighting against the Monarch that had helped them establish the colonies. The Monarch considered the revolutionary war an act of betrayal.
